What is a soulmate? There are several definitions and every person may have their own interpretation. There are friends that can be soulmates because you connect on a level that others probably won’t get. There can be partners that you connect with because they know you or even can share the same soul, thoughts, feelings or emotions that you have. Whatever or whoever it is a soulmate can often be described as someone with whom you share a deep, natural, and almost unexplainable connection. It’s a person who feels like they “complete” you in some way — emotionally, spiritually, intellectually, or even energetically.
I’ve often heard that term thrown around. Some people think you can only have one true soulmate, others don’t believe in soulmates at all, but more recently it came up in a conversation so I looked into it a little further to grasp what exactly a soulmate is and I was fascinated by what I had read.
As I suspected there are several types of soulmates all of which have their own title and different characteristics but one thing was for certain you can have several and that myth that there is only one for each person is just that, a myth.
Romantic Soulmates – Someone you deeply love and connect with. You may grow together as partners, or you may part ways after a meaningful chapter. The part that stuck with me when reading about this was the “chapter” part. Some soulmates are just a chapter in your story and as I’ve spoken about previously, I’m writing a new story with new chapters and a new soulmate too. It doesn’t minimize or negate any other soulmate bond and is still part of you.
Platonic Soulmates – A best friend, sibling, or even a mentor. This bond feels soul-deep and unshakable, often like family (even if you’re not related). I’ve been blessed with some incredible platonic soulmates and am truly grateful that I can honour them with this title as well.
Karmic Soulmates – These often come into your life to teach you hard lessons, stir growth, or trigger transformation. The connection may feel intense, even chaotic but still beautiful. I’m sure several people reading this today have had this type of connection at some point in their lives and I know I definitely have as well. Equally special in all of its chaos.
Twin Flames – Some people or sites have different opinions on this one but I still feel it is a soulmate as well. A Twin flame is thought to be your “mirror soul”, not necessarily a peaceful relationship, but one that challenges you to face your deepest self. Although it sounds less appealing I firmly believe it gives you the gift of learning who you are and seeing yourself from a different lens and that is beautiful in itself.
Finally there are kindred spirits – People you connect with instantly and share strong similarities with — often short-term but still impactful. Although they can come and go you formed a connection with them that you could potentially carry with you for a lifetime.
What I ultimately learned is that Soulmates aren’t just lovers. They can be friends, siblings, or even strangers who briefly cross your path but leave a lasting mark on your soul and that is a gift. So yes — soulmates can be many, not just one, and they can show up in different ways, at different stages of your life, and even when you least expect it.
As I reflect, I realize I’ve had the gift of soulmates in almost all these forms and even if some of those have ended for whatever reason I still cherish each one for what it taught me and for what it filled my heart and soul with for that period of time. What incredible gifts we each are given through each experience of any of the above.
I want to end this post with a beautiful sentiment I read that truly resonated with me and it goes like this: “Soulmates aren’t found. They’re remembered—like echoes of something ancient waking up inside us. And when they do, we’re never quite the same.”
So if this post made you reflect on past, present or even helped you look towards potential future soulmates then I hope it brings you peace, hope and fills your heart with all the warm feelings it did for mine.
