You are driving along one day and a song comes on the radio and BAM it takes you right back to a specific time, event or moment – does that ever happen to you? It happens to me a lot. I literally have a memory that can be associated to almost any song. I’m not sure why or how that has happened or if that is something common with others but that’s just the way it goes for me.
Music is so soothing, therapeutic and nostalgic. I have music on all the time and with every tune that comes up I smile. Whether it be Colour Me Bad’s album that reminds me of being in Grade 7/8 on Friday nights skating with friends at Amesbury Arena, or how about Another Bad Creation’s Ieasha which was a nickname my boyfriend at 15 years old gave me. Then there is Madonna’s Vogue and being in Atlantic City dancing at my very first dance competition and winning first place. How about Paul McCartney’s Simply Having a Wonderful Christmas Time which blasted on the radio immediately after Mark proposed. Oh and I definitely can’t forget Jamie Foxx’s Blame it on the Alcohol and Black Eyed Peas Boom Boom Pow which takes me right back to the most epic girls trip in New York City. The list goes on and on and with every song I hear I reminisce and feel all those same feelings I had in that particular moment. It’s such an incredible way to hold on to great memories.
Mila and I have regular dance parties in our living room on any given evening – it was something we did when she was younger but we had stopped the last several years and now it’s become something we’ve brought back and incorporated in to our evening routine. It’s such a fun way for us both to just get loud, to laugh and to be silly. We dance around singing along to each song that shuffles on Spotify and I honestly love having these moments with her. It also helps keep me feeling like a kid too. I hope that maybe when she is older and she hears a song it will take her back to a memory of us having this time together – I am sure I will, even in my old age.
Song lyrics can be so impactful too. Listen to the words of any song where someone has poured out their feelings and heart and you will feel the emotions they are conveying. Or what about a party anthem style song with powerful lyrics that can pump you up for a good workout, run or just give you the boost you need to get through a tough day. It’s such a simple thing, listening to music, but it is one of those simple pleasures and joys in life that should be incorporated in your daily routine.
Oh and concerts are also such a huge part of my life too. I can almost guarantee that I will see a minimum of 2 concerts a year because I just enjoy them that much. I’ve seen all types of genres too from Lionel Richie, Bryan Adams, New Kids on the Block, U2, Counting Crows, Bush X and of course the one and only Madonna starting from when I was just 8 years old. This year I will be taking Mila to her first concert (Justin Bieber) and this is something I am beyond excited to experience with her. No shame here in admitting I’m a Belieber! This concert is definitely going to be a memory for both of us, that I am sure of! His newest album has yet again nailed it! He has so many great dance hits and several beautiful ballads and I can’t wait to see Mila’s reaction to seeing them performed LIVE. That rush you get hearing the artist’s voice, the pyrotechnics, the dancing, the screaming at the top of your lungs when they hit the stage…….so much fun and I will be right there beside her belting out the words to each song and dancing it out with my little girl. I’ve already warned her that her mommy is quite the fun time at a concert so we shall see if I am cool enough for her or not. I will be sure to post about that experience this summer once we finally get to see him.
After a great weekend that was filled with amazing company, a lot of laughter and plenty of music I know I will carry some pretty incredible memories with those songs too. Each time I hear one of them it will instantly bring such joy to my heart and a smile to my face. I truly live for these moments with such special people and am so grateful to be experiencing them.
So today, I ask each of you to take a moment and to turn on some of your favourite tunes. My hope for you is that it will instantly change your mood or maybe even take you back to a happy memory too. Lord knows we could all use a little bit of happiness in our lives right about now so I am sending each reader love, light and joy. Always.
